Holmberg to Face Law for Trofeo Trophy

Ravenna, Italy - JUNE 27, 1989 - Peter Holmberg's Team Caribbean Match Racing Team bested Luc Pillot 3-1 in Saturday's best-of-five Semi-Final Round of the Trofeo Challenge Roberto Trombini being held in Ravenna, Italy. In the day's other Semi-Final contest, Great Britain's No. 3-ranked Chris Law went the distance to beat Dean Barker of New Zealand by a 3-2 margin and advance to Sunday's Final against Holmberg, the Trofeo Trophy defender and a No. 6 world-ranked match racer.

Sunday's match racing will feature a best-of-seven series before the spectator-lined shores of the Marina di Ravenna Yacht Club. Barker will race Pillot in the Petite Finals series to determine third and fourth place shares of the $60,000 prize purse.

Battling for the fifth through twelfth place finishes are Kiwi Gavin Brady, Italian Paolo Cian, Dane Morten Henriksen, Italian Francesco De Angelis,  Italian Mario Celon, New Zealander Murray Jones, Frenchman Thierry Peponnet, and Italian Roberto Ferrarese.

Sailing a Tom 28 within the breakwater in flat seas and light-to-moderate 5-10 knot winds,  Holmberg handily defeated Pillot in back-to-back races before suffering his first loss to the No. 12-ranked Frenchman in Race Three. Fighting back in Race Four, Holmberg upset Pillot in a "proper battle" that carried Team Caribbean to the finish line first.

"We've experienced some very intense racing," says Holmberg. "There were a lot of penalty flags. Considering that it's our first event as a team, we really pulled together. We're tired, but intend to take care of business tomorrow." For the Trofeo event, helmsman Holmberg is sailing with one of  St. Maarten's premier racers, Paul Dielemans (main), and St. Thomas
sailors, Morgan Avery (trim), and Maurice Kurg (bow and tactics).

A Virgin Islands native, Holmberg is the designated skipper for the Team Caribbean America's Cup Challenge. His international match racing team is sponsored in Italy by its Team Caribbean America's Cup Challenge sponsors and American Airlines.
