Holmberg Knocked out of Swedish Match Semi-Final Skipper Quartet Set for Saturday
Marstrand, SWEDEN - JULY 3, 1998 - After winning Italy's Trofeo Challenge earlier this month, Peter Holmberg's Team Caribbean match racing team went winless in Friday's final-four round-robin race series of the Swedish Match Cup and failed to advance to the semi-finals set for Saturday in Marstrand, Sweden.
Representing Japan and still undefeated in the Swedish competition, three-time event winner Peter Gilmour (13 points), and Denmark's Sten Morh (10 points) will advance to the semis from Group A. In Group B, New Zealand's Dean Barker staged a comeback to garner 10 points and a shot at the semi-finals along with France's Bertrand Paci.
Friday's light air and constant wind shifts were a source of frustration for Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club officials and match racers alike, forcing delays that extended the day's sailing well into the afternoon. Spectators, however, were delighted, as the windward-leeward course was also forced closer to shore.
The Swedish Match Cup features 16 top international skippers competing in 36-foot Danish-built DS Match Racers in almost continuous matches and the largest spectator audience of any yachting event in Sweden, estimated at 100,000.
Competing in Group B, Holmberg was bested by Finland's Jesper Bank, Croatia's Tomislav Basic, Sweden's Magnus Holmberg and Dean Barker. His five-man crew consists of St. Thomas sailors Morgan Avery and Maurice Kurg, as well as St. Maarten's Paul Dielemans and Mikael Bjorndahl.
Peter Holmberg's international match racing team is sponsored on the circuit by its Team Caribbean America's Cup Challenge sponsors and American Airlines. |
