AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND -- "Today's satisfying win shows you can indeed teach old dogs new tricks," stated Stars &
Stripes helmsman Ken Read. "After yesterday's loss to America True, the members of our afterward had a long discussion," Read explained. "We pinpointed all the things that went wrong, and why
they went wrong. We went to school on those mistakes and didn't make them today. Today we did it right." Did they ever. Stars
& Stripes beat the Spanish Challenge by 50 seconds in a race sailed in 10-16 knots of wind. The first two legs of today's race were very close -- the difference being essentially the lead that Team
Dennis Conner won off the starting line. "We wanted the left," Read explained. Stars and Stripes got the left ^Å and the left was right. Although boat speed was very even, Dennis
Conner's blue boat leveraged their advantage off the starting line and had a 24-second edge at the top mark. It was the second beat however, that Stars & Stripes opened up. "We changed jibs, and got
the old gal really hooked up," Read continued. Hooked up indeed. They had a one minute lead at the second weather mark and from that point on played a safe conservative game of defense."We're still
learning the boat, and we're learning how to work together as a team. But the key is, we ARE learning," Read concluded. Tomorrow Team Dennis Conner faces another big test as they meet Paul
Cayard's AmericaOne syndicate from St. Francis Yacht Club . |
