With a Victory over Young America

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND -- "Out on the Hauraki Gulf, having a fast boat is not good enough -- you also need a strong boat," said Stars & Stripes helmsman Ken Read. "If there's a better prepared, more durable boat sailing in the Louis Vuitton Cup series than Stars & Stripes, I sure don't know which one it is."

It was that level of preparedness and durability that provided Stars & Stripes with their second consecutive victory over the New York Yacht Club's Young America syndicate, in a race that saw 20+ knots of wind.

Today, Young America asked for and was granted a 40-minute postponement to repair damage to their rig. Apparently, that period was insufficient, and they never were able to re-hoist their main sail. Young America started the race with just a jib flying. After sailing that way for two legs of the course they retired, solidifying the win for Team Dennis Conner.

"Reichel / Pugh, New England Boat Works, Omohundro Spars, North Sails, project manager Mick Harvey, and all of the shore crew who work tirelessly on the boat should feel very proud of their contributions to our team's winning record," Read continued. "Those of us on the boat's sailing team know and fully appreciate the importance of their contributions to our performance. They're the reason we're where we are in this series."

The last race for Stars & Stripes in Round Two of the Louis Vuitton Cup Series is against the Young Australia syndicate.
