AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND -- "Give them the credit," said helmsman Ken Read about Team Dennis Conner's 30-second loss to America True. "They simply sailed a better race than we did. 

"Later, Read explained why Stars & Stripes looked a bit sluggish off the starting line. "We had a main sheet problem on our last jibe before the start and that opened the door for them.  As a result, they had a good jump on us when the gun went off, and then did a great job of protecting theirlead. 

"The race was sailed in 17-22 knots of breeze and America True had a 10 second edge at the top mark. The two boats never separated very much on any of the six legs of the course. "Our upwind speed was good, and we had a couple of chances to get by them," Read added. "However it was one of those days when nothing seemed to go right. That happens in yacht racing, and we're not going to beat ourselves up about it," Read concluded. "We'll be ready for Nippon tomorrow."

Victories are worth one point each in Round One, four points in Round Two and nine points in Round Three.
