St. Thomas, USVI-August 4, 1998-Officials of the Team Caribbean America's Cup Challenge today announced that Roger L. Headrick has joined the syndicate's Board of Directors.-- Mr. Headrick, a part time resident of St. Thomas, is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Minnesota Vikings NFL football team.
"Roger is clearly someone who can help us in many areas," said Steve Morton, Vice President of Marketing. "He has well-honed skills in marketing, finance, team building, and fund raising. He knows the workings of corporate America and we believe his help in securing additional sponsorship will be invaluable. By joining Team Caribbean, Roger moves us to a new level of professionalism."
"This is an exciting opportunity for me," said Headrick. "Each year when the Vikings enter training camp our goal is to play in the final game of the season. Our goal at Team Caribbean is to sail in, and win, the final race of the America's Cup. I don't see any reason why we can't accomplish that."
Headrick was born in West Orange, New Jersey and received an AB degree from Williams College and an MBA from Columbia University. Prior to joining the Vikings in 1991, his 30-year business career included top management positions with Exxon Corporation and The Pillsbury Company.
Since taking on the leadership positions with the Vikings, Headrick has developed an organizational structure that has revived a winning tradition. Following a 6-10 record the season before he arrived, the Vikings have since appeared in five playoffs and won two division titles.
Headrick has represented the National Football League as chairman of the NFL Properties Executive Committee. This organization works with team owners and the NFL president to establish policies and strategies for the League's licensing and marketing arm. Headrick has also been a member of the League's Broadcasting Committee, which oversees the NFL's television policies; the International Committee, which advises clubs on the NFL's international development activities and oversees the operations of NFL Europe; the Realignment Committee, which reviews any restructuring of the NFL's divisions and conferences; and the League's Special Committee on Opportunities and Challenges.
"This is a major event on our road to winning the America's Cup," said Peter Holmberg, skipper and co-founder of Team Caribbean. "Roger is a proven winner in sport and business and he brings with him an infectious enthusiasm for competing at the highest levels. He's been working with us behind the scenes and we are very fortunate he's agreed to take on a larger role."
"Roger has built the organizational structure that has made the Vikings winners since he's been there," said Michael Born, co-founder of Team Caribbean. "We expect he'll help us do the same here."
Headrick and his wife Lynn live in Wayzata, Minnesota and spend as much time as possible in their St. Thomas home. They have four children and nine grandchildren.
Based in the US Virgin Islands, Team Caribbean is the first Caribbean-based challenge for the America's Cup, the only challenge to have ever originated from a US territory, and the only challenge ever made official by a woman commodore. The team has signed several regional sponsors over the last 18 months, including Cellular One of Puerto Rico and Texaco Caribbean Corporation. Other major sponsors include Topa Equities, Ritz-Carlton of St. Thomas, the San Juan Star group of newspapers and GANT USA. |
