Up - The Virgin Islands America's Cup Challenge Progress Report

In a sport dominated by nations competing for yachting's `holy grail' with the support of giant corporations, the U.S. Virgin Islands became the first U.S. Territory in history to quest for the Cup, the undisputed 'Super Bowl of Sailing,' and the first to field a multiracial crew.

Conceived by native Virgin Islanders, Peter Holmberg and Michael Bornn, VI Challenge was one of six U.S. Challengers recognized by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and counted among 18 official Challengers around the globe who have declared their intent to face-off  for the Challenger Selection Series in 1999, for the right to compete against the winner of the Defender Series in the America's Cup 2000.

In January 1999, VI Challenge formed an association with Team Dennis Conner.
